Calling Professionals About Cockroaches In Your West Palm Beach Home Should Be A Priority

Cockroach extermination West Palm Beach

Of all the pests to spot scurrying around your West Palm Beach home, few are as unsightly as the cockroach. They are unwelcome home-invading pests that invade in large numbers and prove to be quite difficult to get rid of. Additionally, cockroaches are known to spread a vast array of disease-causing bacteria and pathogens. That means they’re worse than just unsightly; they’re dangerous, too. That is precisely why you need to know what your options are should your home become infested with cockroaches. Your family’s health could depend on it.

Identifying Common Area Cockroaches

Although there are many different species of cockroach throughout the world, here in West Palm Beach, there are only four species that you are most likely to encounter.

  • American Cockroaches are the most common cockroach species in Florida. They grow to be 1 ¼ of an inch to 2 1/8th of an inch long. They are reddish-brown and feature a yellowish figure-eight pattern on the back of their heads. They also have wings and can fly.
  • German Cockroaches are a light brown or tan color. They grow to be ½ to 5/8th of an inch long. They have two dark stripes on their backs (behind their heads) and also have wings, but rarely fly.
  • Australian Cockroaches are light-brown and feature a dark spot on their backs which is encircled with a yellowish ring. They grow anywhere from 1 1/5th to 1 ½ inch long and are adept fliers.
  • Brown-banded Cockroaches are brown in color and feature distinct light-brown banding across their wings. They grow to be ½ an inch long and the males are capable of flying.

Threats Posed By Cockroaches

As previously stated, while it’s well known that cockroaches are gross, many people do not realize they are also dangerous. Cockroaches can spread a variety of disease-causing bacteria and pathogens as they scurry about your home. They often frequent unsanitary sewers and trash heaps, where they pick up all sorts of harmful bacteria. Then, when they enter your home, they spread that bacteria to countertops, dishes, and even food if it has been left out. Some of the bacteria and pathogens that cockroaches spread can lead to diseases such as salmonellosis, typhoid fever, gastroenteritis, and E. coli. Additionally, cockroaches are known to trigger allergies and asthma in people who are at risk.

The Issues With Cockroach Infestations

One of the biggest issues with cockroach infestations is that they can be hard to prevent. Precautionary measures can be taken but they may still find a way to get into your home. That is because they can fit through the smallest cracks and crevices. Sealing all of these cracks is no small order. They can come in through vents, pipes, and other openings that exist around your home. They infest in large numbers and are great at hiding, so getting rid of them without professional help can be a huge uphill battle.
