When is mosquito season in West Palm Beach?

Mosquito season peaks in West Palm Beach during the summer months between June and August. But due to the area's warm climate, mosquitoes can still be buzzing around and biting throughout the year.

What types of mosquitoes are in West Palm Beach?

Two common types of mosquitoes in West Palm Beach are the aedes aegypti and salt marsh mosquitoes.

  • Aedes aegypti: These mosquitoes are dark brown to black and have scales on their thorax that form a violin-like pattern. The tarsal segment on their hind legs has white bands, giving their legs a striped appearance. These mosquitoes can thrive in urban areas and prefer to feed on people.

Salt marsh mosquitoes: These mosquitoes are brown with a gray patch on their side and a white ring around their proboscis. They are aggressive biters, and unlike most species, they are active during the middle of the day and can fly in the wind. Also, instead of laying their eggs on top of standing water like most species, they lay their eggs on dry ground that floods frequently.

Do I need to prepare my yard for mosquito control services?

No, we do not require any sort of preparation for mosquito control services.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

Mosquitoes are dangerous pests that spread diseases throughout South Florida that make people and their pets ill. Encephalitis, chikungunya, and the West Nile virus are all spread by mosquitoes. In tropical and developing countries, mosquitoes are well-known for spreading malaria, the Zika virus, and yellow fever. Throughout the southern United States, the threat of mosquitoes infecting cats and dogs with parasitic heartworm is significant. If not treated, the infection is fatal.

How to treat a mosquito bite

  • Avoid scratching the bite. This is tough, but we’re all rooting for you. Mosquito bites are irritated the more you scratch them, which could lead to an infection (or more realistically just keep the bites there for longer)

  • Wash the area with soap and water

  • Use Hydrocortisone creams or other ointments designed for itchiness

  • Apple anti-itch lotions like calamine lotion

  • Take an antihistamine

  • Try putting aloe vera on the irritated bite - you can buy the gel on its own or even buy the plant fresh

  • Ice the irritated area

  • Oatmeal! It might sound off, mix equal parts oatmeal and water and apply it to your skin for ten minutes. Or, if the bites are all over, soak in a bathtub sprinkled with about 1 cup of oats.
