South Hutchinson Island in St. Lucie County is known for being one of the top sea turtle nesting areas in Florida. If you live in the area and haven't learned all about sea turtles and how they nest, here's how it works. April through September, female sea turtles will find the perfect spot to nest on Hutchinson Island beaches.

Once the mother sea turtle has found her nest, she'll dig a hole about two feet deep in the sand to lay her eggs. Next, is the incubation period of about sixty days. And here's a fun fact: If the sand is at a warmer temperature, the nest will produce mostly female eggs. If the sand is cooler, the nest will produce mostly male eggs!

After the eggs hatch, the cute baby sea turtles, each about 1.5 to 3 inches in length, will race to the sea. Then they have to stay strong to survive predators, and the harsh weather of hurricane season. If they survive, the males will remain at sea and the females will return to the beaches to reproduce.

Five sea turtle species you can see at South Hutchinson Island during sea turtle season:

• Loggerhead turtles (the most common)
• Green turtles
• Leatherback turtles
