Drain Fly Identification in Florida

What Are Drain Flies?

Drain flies are a common type of fly found in poorly maintained drains. These cases could include slow or clogged drains, unused toilets, refrigerated drain pans, and standing water from leaky pipes.

They are small, weak fliers at about 1/16 to ¼ of an inch usually black, gray, or dark brown. They are often called moth flies for their bodies and wings covered in hair, resembling a moth.

Drain flies are nocturnal, so unless you’re a night owl, you may not spot them immediately. However, they sometimes may be out during the day and along the walls - if you try to catch it, it will fly away immediately.

How Do I Know I Have Drain Flies?

The best way to know if you have drain flies is to seal tape over the drain you suspect is infested and wait 24 hours. Once the time is up, take off the tape and see if any flies are stuck. If you see flies on the tape, it means you have a drain fly infestation.

How Do I Get Rid of Drain Flies?

Getting rid of drain flies starts by evaluating the infested drain. Have your plumbing inspected by a professional to see if you have any leaks causing standing water in your pipes or any other plumbing issues.

By fixing any plumbing problems, you should find that your drain fly infestation goes away. If that doesn’t work, here are a few other ways to get rid of drain flies:

  1. Take a metal pipe brush and scrape inside the drain to remove organic material such as eggs and larvae that may be present.
  2. Pour boiling water down the drain.
  3. Call a professional pest control company that offers drain fly control.

How Can I Prevent Drain Flies?

There are two important ways to prevent drain flies. The first is to ensure the plumbing throughout your home is in working order. We recommend that you have it inspected by a plumber to make sure you don’t have any hidden leaks producing standing water that can attract the drain flies.
