Spring Pest Control
April 06, 2022
While our South Florida winter may not be quite so cold, it’s still nice to transition back to Spring.
The good news is that many of the winter pests, like rodents, roaches, and moths are not as common during the Spring season.
Still, this is not the time to forget about pest control for your South Florida home!
On the contrary, the warm, wet spring tends to attract other pests. Additionally, Spring is the best time to prepare your home for the many summer pests we deal with.
This season, add “pest control” to your spring cleaning list!
Let’s take a closer look at the top pests of this season and what you can do to keep your home pest-free.
What Is Spring Pest Control?
Every local pest control company knows what the Spring season entails. Tons of calls requesting an immediate pest control treatment.
Each year as the temperature heats up and the rain starts, all of the bugs and termites that were laying low over winter come out.
The main pests we receive calls for in April are sugar ants, fire ants, weeds in lawns, mosquitoes and swarming termites. Of course, we always receive calls for cockroaches and spiders year-round as the demand for those services never quite seems to let up.
Our customers that are on year-round pest control plans are fortunately protected when Spring brings on the onslaught of pests. Our preventative barrier applications made to the exterior of homes are designed to reduce and eliminate the exterior pest pressure that arrives with the warmer weather.
Spring pest control in South Florida is about handling the most common pests during this time of year. Some pests are a year-round concern, which means preventing and treating them remains important in the spring. Additionally, other pests are most common and active during this season, which means they require extra care to prevent and exterminate.
One example is millipedes. They are not very common in the winter or summer. However, they undergo mass migration in the fall and spring. During mass migration, they wander more and are far more likely to end up in your basement, garage, and home.
On the other hand, fleas are an issue year-round in our state. They are always looking for warm bodies to feed off of and can make their way into your home via your pets, clothes, etc.
Ultimately, there are many pests that are more common in the spring. Each pest requires a unique approach for prevention and treatment, and that’s the purpose of spring pest control.
Additionally, spring pest control helps prepare your home for the approaching summer months. Summer is well known for an abundance of insects, so spring preparation is key for a pest-free summer.

Top Spring Pests In South Florida
Florida is quite a paradise, for both people and pests. Here are the top spring pests you should look out for:
- Millipedes- mass migration
Ants are a common problem in Florida. Generally speaking, they are not the most harmful pest. Still, small ants on your kitchen counter are not appetizing nor safe!
There are several types of ants that may try to make their way into your home. The most common South Florida ant species include:
- Sugar Ants: These small ants love tropical climates and look for plants to feed on. Houses with many palm trees should keep an eye out for these ants. They like moisture, and commonly show up on countertops and near sinks.
- Ghost Ants: At first glance, sugar ants and ghost ants may look very similar. Ghost ants often enter homes in search of food. It’s common to deal with invasions from several different colonies at once.
- Black Ants: Black garden ants are glossy, black, small ants. You may find them underneath rocks or rotten wood.
- Carpenter Ants: Carpenter ants are not extremely common in South Florida, but they can wreak havoc on your home. They burrow into wood and can cause damage similar to termites.
- Big-headed Ants: While only around one in ten actually have big heads, this type of ant is easy for us to identify in that they commonly bring dirt into homes along the interior baseboards. They nest under home foundations and their colonies can be in the millions.
Termites are also common during this season. Unfortunately, most people don’t spot them until they’ve caused serious damage to their home.
Termites are very common in South Florida. Termites eat their way through the wood, creating hollow holes and leaving either termite droppings or mud tubes in your house. Worse yet, some termites fly (these are called reproductive swarmers).
Once you have them, getting termites out of your house is not easy. They hide in hard-to-reach places and can be found year-round in our state. Various treatments we offer include tent fumigations, no tent termite control, trench and treats, and termite bait stations.
Mosquitoes are another major problem come spring, and they flock to stagnant water for their breeding ground. There are 80 species of mosquitoes in the West Palm Beach, FL area alone! Not only are they annoying, but they can also be dangerous. 13 of the 80 species can transmit diseases to humans and pets.
You don’t want to wait until summer to start battling these pests. The key to a pest-free home and yard for summer is spring pest control, especially for mosquitos.
Some of the mosquito control options we provide include:
- Monthly fogging to eliminate adult mosquitoes. We ensure pet-safe and human-safe practices.
- Monthly placement of biological larvicides in standing water to prevent mosquito breeding.
- In2Care Mosquito Traps to attract and eliminate mosquitoes of all ages. They are highly effective and can help protect a vast area from these pests.
- Natural mosquito control with twice monthly fogging of the landscape.
Spiders are another common issue come spring. Many people struggle to deal with spiders because they can be quite frightening. Additionally, some spiders in Florida are venomous, which makes it dangerous for your to address them on your own.
South Florida spiders enter homes in search of food and protection from the wet spring months. They are also attracted to other pests, as they eat mosquitoes, ants, etc.
Some of the spiders you may face include Black Widow and Brown Recluse spiders. Black Widows are venomous and native to our area. You can spot them by their unique hourglass-shaped marking on their midsection. Recluse spiders are not native, but they are also dangerous. Check for a violin-shaped marking on its back.
If you see a Black Widow or Brown Recluse spider, immediately call Native Pest Management for professional spider pest control.
Spring is a time for millipede mass migration. This makes them far more likely to meander into your home, especially the garage or basement. The good news is that they cannot reproduce inside.
Still, these large, often creepy pests, like to wander during the night. They look for damp hiding spots. They hide during the day, which can make them hard to get rid of. The best way to stop millipedes is with prevention. Keeping them out of your home is the best option, and something to focus on this spring.
Native Pest Management is here to help control millipedes. We offer preventative services to keep them away from your home as well as various control methods to remove them if they’ve gotten in.
Fleas are a year-round problem in Florida. Due to our mild winters, many survive and then thrive come spring.
Fleas are tiny pests, they are difficult to spot and remove. During the spring, they often make their way inside by attaching to pets or clothes. Additionally, they like to hide in tall grass and plants.
If you dealt with fleas in the winter, then spring is an even more vital time to control these pests. Native Pest Management is here to help with our flea management services.
